2011 Knicks Need To Shore Up DefenseFiled Under (Pamela Anderson) by Cancerian on 13-04-2011If you’re trying to bet on NBA picks at BetUs, the toughest team to figure out in the playoffs may be the New York Knicks, who have gone through a wildly inconsistent period since pulling off the trade of the season to pick up Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups from Denver. The Knicks went through a stretch of losing nine of 10 games, but had won seven straight ahead of Tuesday’s visit from top-seeded Chicago, and they already know they’ll be facing Boston in the first round. Could the Knicks actually pull this off?
The two have met once since the Anthony trade, and the Celtics came away with a 96-86 win at Madison Square Garden, and given their championship experience, you know Boston is going to be a tough out, regardless of what problems they’re going through in the frontcourt. The 86 points scored by the Knicks were the lowest since Anthony came to town, and the Celtics manhandled Amare Stoudemire and the rest of the New York frontcourt in the paint, outscoring them 44-28 down low and claiming a 48-38 edge on the boards. The Knicks are 7-11 when they fail to reach 100 points, and 35-17 when they do, so they must find a way to get some easy baskets.
But the real key may come on the other end of the floor, where the Knicks have not been good all season, ranking fourth from the bottom of the league in points allowed. The Celtics are 29-4 this season when they score 100 points or more, while averaging 96.3 points throughout the season, and the Knicks are 22-34 when the opposition reaches the century mark. The Knicks aren’t the strongest defensive team in the world, and their best players, Stoudemire and Anthony aren’t known as defensive stoppers, and Billups can’t stay in front of the best point guards in the league anymore. Defense has never been a robust priority under coach Mike D’Antoni in Phoenix or New York, and that could be their downfall.
But the potential is there, as we’ve seen in wins against good defense teams like Miami, Philadelphia and Atlanta. The Miami win was especially crucial as Anthony asked specifically to guard LeBron James, and he made a few big plays down the stretch which showed he could do it when he wants to. If the Knicks’ best players can show a commitment to defense, the rest of the team will follow suit, and the Knicks could be a problem in the playoffs.
